ICESI/ ENGLISH Level 5 MODULE 1 Andrea Rizo

Narration means the art of storytelling, and the purpose of narrative writing is to tell stories. Any time you tell a story to a friend or family member about an event or incident in your day, you engage in a form of narration. In addition, a narrative can be factual or fictional. A factual story is one that is based on, and tries to be faithful to, actual events as they unfolded in real life. A fictional story is a made-up, or imagined, story; the writer of a fictional story can create characters and events as he or she sees fit. The big distinction between factual and fictional narratives is based on a writer’s purpose. The writers of factual stories try to recount events as they actually happened, but writers of fictional stories can depart from real people and events because the writers’ intents are not to retell a real-life event. Biographies and memoirs are examples of factual stories, whereas novels and short stories are examples of fictional stories. They will practice how to narrate stories and tales.

The life project is the plan that a person draws in order to obtain an objective. All humans have dreams and needs. During our childhood, we play to be superheroes, to be firemen or veterinarians; no matter what profession we chose, our dreams were based on what we “wanted to be”. A life project is simply a document that compiles “what we want to be” and “what we are going to do” to achieve it in certain chapters of our life. It also includes the possibilities and means/resources that we need and currently have to achieve those goals. In summary, a life project is our little manual where we register our dreams and the actions that we are going to carry out in order to fulfill those goals. ICESI/LEVEL V/MODULE 1 PREDICTING FUTURE FAMILIES

Students read predictions about what families will be like in the future and summarise the information they have read. It is a group activity to allow collaborative learning and the negotiation of meaning and sense in the target language. Furthermore, the configuration of the activity will allow students to confront and experiment with reading strategies. The final product is a list of 8 sentences that summarise 8 different pieces of information which discuss the concept of families in the future. The use of the future tense is the focus of attention in these sentences.

Icesi - Level 5 - Extensive Reading project

This is a project that helps students develop reading comprehension skills. The idea is that the whole class reads a book, or several, throughout the course. Since books have vocabulary and expressions that students cannot understand, the idea is that students and teachers read the book in Google docs (or another cloud), and that they scaffold the book together. The teacher may introduce pictures, translations of expressions, explanations, comments in the shared file, to clarify vocabulary, explain expressions, etc. so that all the students can read them. In this way, reading becomes easier for the students. It is recommended that the teacher scaffolds the first chapter or chapters (depending on the lenght of the book) and then, the teacher should assign the responsibility of the scaffolding to the students. At the end, the book or story will be full of pictures and comments and it will be more accessible to students.

The objective with this project is having students reconstruct their university, faculty or program history through the design of a History Timeline Lapbook. History is inescapable and it is important for students to understand the legacies of the past in the present. Understanding the linkages between past and present is absolutely basic for a good understanding of the condition of being human. In this particular case, students will understand their condition as future professionals by reconstructing the history of the place where they study in a lapbook.

Justification In the online age that we live in, having a professional website is an absolute necessity for nearly all career choices and business ventures. A great website can simultaneously operate as a marketing tool, a store platform, a display of works and skills, a communication channel and as an engine for branding. Description  Students design a personal website where they need to include their personal profile as well as their professional profile. In the personal profile, they describe things that make them who they are. In the professional profile, they describe things they have accomplished in their professional life. Every entry in the website must follow an English paragraph structure and the design should represent who they are as professionals.  Tools Students will get their own domain using Jimdo as the main tool for hosting their personal website.

DESCRIPTION:  This is a project to be carried out during the course of English VI, at the Universidad Icesi. It prepares the students for a job interview in English while at the same time increasing their exposure to the four English language skills.  The importance of preparing the students for a job interview in English cannot be overemphasized, since they will not only be interviewed several times in their lifetime, but they will also be in administrative positions in which they will have to interview job applicants in the companies where they work. In addition to this, the project offers an effective way to improve their competence in the English language.

Icesi English Level VI -2018-2: To participate in a job interview as interviewers or as interviewees

Students participate in a job interview asking and answering questions that cover their background, education, skills, career goals motivation and personality using grammar and vocabulary related to the activity.  Through the activity students role play an important part of a hiring process –interviewing– which among other assessment activities, they are very like to have in their near future. Emotions, qualifications and success, topics of Speakout Intermediate Module 1 Level VI 2018-2, are usually an important part of an assessment process and students apply their knowledge in different activities prior to the job interview.

Through the activity, students are expected to talk about who is behind the most inspiring and innovative companies in tech and make their own TOP 10 by filling out a form containing these tech celebrities’ most relevant information (Job Title, place of work, tech platform description, fortune) Talking about communities, neighbors, cyberspace, welcoming guests are topics of Speak out Intermediate Module 2-Unit 8 Level V 2018-2, which are usually an important part of an assessment process and students apply their knowledge in different activities prior to the information sharing.
