4th A ELL Unit 1 Weeks 1-2

Descripción

In these first two weeks of academic work, students will begin Unit 1 of the Reading Street Program (Savvas Realize), learning new vocabulary and grammar, as well as some reading and writing skills. The aim for this period is to connect the story of weeks 1 & 2 with the topic of Unit 1, Turning Points, and how to deal, learn or get experience from the encounter with diverse people or new places.

Objetivos

Unit 1 week 1: Students will understand that diversity: means variety, means different people uniting, and can teach us new things.

Unit 1 week 2: Students will understand that opportunities can make life better, give people hope, are wanted by many and increase with education and experience.

MONDAY, September 7th

First, play scribble.io with vocabulary words from Unit 1 Big Question video. Show the video and discuss on elements they can remember.  Students'Book p. 20-21

Second, work in the language needed for week 1, first the amazing words through the weekly video, then the vocabulary and spelling words. Use the Pearson portal and Quizlet to learn pronunciation, meaning and practice these words.

Third, let them solve the vocabulary activities. Set up a 4 column chart in the notebook (rainbow letters, crazy letters, abc, bubble words, etc-- show worksheet from Pinterest)

Then learn about the reading skills --Sequence and Summarize--, for this week through video and short readings from Savvas. Workbook, reading skills pages.

Story of the Week, Because of Winn-Dixie, 1st read. Listen and read.

Write a realistic story about a character who reaches a turning point in his or her life.  Students' Book p. 40-41.

Paired Selection of the Week, "A Film with a Message of Hope," random students read, Teacher checks for fluency.

Practice spelling words with a game in Quizlet. Spelling Words Test (dictation). Review affixes & short vowels VCCV (Student's Book p. 44)

Review conventions (sentences) and play Kahoot (quiz phase).

Review Story of the Week, Dramatic retell of the Story (alternative: play movie's trailers or full version)

Review writings from volunteers (realistic fiction)

Set up assignments in Quizlet, lead the plan of classes, apply the spelling words and conventions tests, assist in the dramatic retelling of the story of the week, listen to some of the writings (realistic fiction).

Participate in Quizlet, in the spelling words quiz, in Kahoot, and the dramatic  retelling of the main selection (story of the week), share the writing of a realistic fiction and send all the evidences into the assignments of Google Classroom.
