    • SUMMARY IN ENGLISH: This is an informational nonfiction piece that explains the development and voyage of the Hindenburg and its demise. Hugo Eckener began to make airships in Germany in 1900. Airships were huge, hollow structures. Gas-filled balloons inside made them float. The gas was very explosive. Sparks and flames could easily set the airship on fire. People traveled across the Atlantic Ocean in the airships. The biggest airship ever made was the Hindenburg. It first flew in 1936. It took two and a half days to cross the Atlantic Ocean. On May 3, 1937, the Hindenburg left Germany for what would be its last flight. When the airship reached the United States, thunderstorms kept it from landing right away. The airship circled and came back. Suddenly, the airship was on fire. No one knew how the fire started. Of the ninety-seven people on the ship, sixty-seven survived. Airships were never again used for travel.

The story takes place in Harlem at the end of the Harlem Renaissance. Uncle Click is a famous African American trumpet player. While waiting to have his photograph taken for Highnote Magazine, he realizes that he does not have his signature beret; so he asks his nephew C.J. to go find the missing hat. C.J. races through the streets of Harlem visiting all of the places Uncle Click had been the day before: the barbershop, the diner, and the jazz club where Uncle Click plays. C.J. finds lots of other articles Uncle Click left behind but not the beret. C.J. too has dreams of becoming a famous musician and the people he encounters along his journey all take the time to give him some words of encouragement.  C.J. returns without the beret, but he has managed to spread the word about the photographer and many of Harlem’s most famous jazz players show up for the photograph. People spill out over the steps of the brownstone and into the street, laughing and smiling for the special occasion.

WEEK OF MAY 11 TO MAY 14, 2020

SUMMARY RESUMEN

The Truth About Austin’s Amazing Bats

In Austin, Texas, you can see over a million bats in the night sky. The reconstruction of the Congress Avenue Bridge unintentionally created a perfect habitat for bats. The massive number of bats that pours out from under the bridge attracts many tourists. People come to watch them from high spots and low spots; some watch even from boats. Today Austin loves its bats—although that was not always true!
