Descripción
This lesson plan is designed to introduce high school students aged 15-17 to the various types of texts encountered in English. Understanding different text types such as narrative, descriptive, expository, persuasive, and procedural is essential for developing strong reading and writing skills, which are fundamental for academic success and everyday communication.
Students will learn to identify the features of each text type, recognize their purposes, and understand how to approach reading and writing them effectively. This knowledge empowers students to analyze texts critically and express their ideas clearly in writing, skills that are invaluable for exams, social media, and professional contexts.
The lesson connects to students’ real lives by highlighting how these text types appear in contexts they frequently engage with, such as social networks, advertisements, news articles, and instructions. Through active and varied learning activities guided by the Universal Design for Learning methodology, students will engage with content using multiple means of representation, expression, and motivation, catering to diverse learning needs and styles.

Estudiantes: Discuss briefly in pairs and share ideas with the class.
Motivación y enganche:
Docente: Presents a short, engaging fact: "Did you know that the way we write texts can influence how people think or feel? For example, advertisements use a special type of text to convince us to buy things!"
Contextualización:

Fase de Desarrollo
Tiempo estimado: 40 minutos
Presentación del contenido:
Docente: Uses a combination of slides, spoken explanation, and a short video to introduce four major text types: narrative, descriptive, expository, and persuasive. Each type is explained with clear definitions, examples, and typical features (e.g., purpose, structure, language style).
Actividades de aprendizaje activo:
Actividad 1: "Text Type Sorting"
- Objetivo: Identify and differentiate between text types.
- Instrucciones: The teacher distributes printed excerpts of short texts (one for each type). In groups of 3-4, students read each excerpt and discuss which type it belongs to and why.
- Organización: Grupos de 3-4 estudiantes.
- Producto: Cada grupo entregará una cartulina con los títulos de cada tipo y pegará los textos clasificados correctamente.
- Tiempo: 15 minutos.
- Rol del docente: Circula entre grupos, hace preguntas guía como "¿Qué palabras te ayudan a identificar este texto?", "¿Cuál es el propósito de este texto?". Apoya a quienes tengan dificultades.
Actividad 2: "Feature Highlight"
- Objetivo: Analyze key features and purposes of text types.
- Instrucciones: Using the same texts, each student highlights or underlines typical features (e.g., first-person narration, descriptive adjectives, facts, persuasive language) and writes one sentence explaining the purpose of the text in their own words.
- Organización: Individual.
- Producto: Worksheet with highlighted features and sentence explanation.
- Tiempo: 10 minutos.
- Rol del docente: Observa, ofrece apoyo lingüístico, y pregunta: "¿Por qué crees que usa estas palabras?", "¿Qué efecto busca el autor en el lector?".
Actividad 3: "Create Your Own Text"
- Objetivo: Create a short written text demonstrating understanding of one text type.
- Instrucciones: Students choose one text type and write a short (5-7 sentence) text following the characteristics discussed. For example, a brief narrative story, a descriptive paragraph, a persuasive message, or an informational text. The teacher provides sentence starters and vocabulary lists.
- Organización: Individual.
- Producto: Written text on worksheet or notebook.
- Tiempo: 15 minutos.
- Rol del docente: Monitorea, proporciona retroalimentación inmediata, ayuda con vocabulario y estructura.
Diferenciación:
- Para estudiantes que terminan antes: Invitar a crear un segundo texto de diferente tipo o a ilustrar su texto para reforzar comprensión visual.
- Para estudiantes que necesitan más apoyo: Ofrecer plantillas con frases estructuradas y ejemplos adicionales; permitir trabajo en parejas para mayor seguridad.
Transiciones:
Docente: Resume: "Now that we’ve identified and analyzed the types of texts, let's use what we've learned to create our own texts. This will help you understand how to apply these ideas in your writing."
Fase de Cierre
Tiempo estimado: 10 minutos
Síntesis:
Docente: "Let's do a quick exit ticket. On a sticky note, write one type of text you learned today, one key feature of that type, and one reason why it is useful."
Estudiantes: Write their notes and place them on a board or wall.
Reflexión metacognitiva:
Docente: Asks aloud and students reflect individually or in pairs:
1. "Which type of text do you find easiest to understand or write, and why?"
2. "How can knowing different text types help you outside the classroom?"
3. "What was new or surprising for you about these texts?"
Retroalimentación:
Docente: Provides immediate verbal feedback by reading several exit tickets aloud, highlighting correct identifications and thoughtful reflections. Offers encouragement and clarifies doubts.
Transferencia:
Docente: "Next time, we will practice reading longer texts and identifying these types to improve your comprehension and writing skills even more."
Tarea o reto:
